Take ARR's Chimera trial, where you would (before the hill strat was worked out) want a Bard (the only ranged DPS back in the day) to interrupt a certain move or wipe. Which, these things are important in some content, and less so in others, and also it depends on when you go in (Recent content will be stricter on consquences for missing an interrupt than older content. Yeah, interrupts and impeding moves are on tanks and ranged physical DPS, not on SMN, and it isn't a huge focus on the day-to-day design. I know it's important in WoW too, but I'd argue that learning to recognize and react to the boss's AOE tells is the primary mechanics of most fights. There's actually some really cool looking AOE patterns that bosses use, lol. Attack telegraphs in FFXIV tend to be very clear, but sometimes very strange. I may be wrong because my experience with endgame WoW is limited, but I think there's a lot more emphasis on moving to avoid AOEs than in WoW, even in basic dugeons. As the game goes on, off-GCD skills become more and more important, so you're often weaving two or three skills into those 2.5 seconds. To put it in perspective, the base global skill cooldown in XIV is 2.5 seconds, rather than WoW's 1.5 seconds. I hesitate to use the word "slower" because by the end it doesn't feel slow at all, but it's definitely more deliberate. It's very similar to WoW, but the action tends to be more deliberate.
